Green technology
With a LEED Platinum certification as the goal, Res:4 and Simplex
are employing a number of green technologies and processes into
the cabin, including:
Super insulated envelope
The building envelope itself is somewhat unique as well, thanks to
an innovative insulation method developed by Simplex that
Fricchione calls “flash and batt”: The structure is
built from the inside out, with the sheetrock going on the studs
before the outer sheathing. Spray foam insulation is then placed
from the outside going in, along with batt insulation.
Rainwater collection
Rainwater will be collected from the roof and drained directly
into the large storage tanks located beneath the deck.
Greywater system
On-site recycling of water used in domestic applications such as
the shower and sinks.
Photovoltaic array
Used to convert sunlight into electricity and hot water.
High-efficiency lighting and plumbing fixtures
LED light fixtures will be used throughout the cabin, pairing with
occupancy sensors also tied to the fan system in the bathroom.
EPDM rubber membrane roofing system
Sloped high-performance roof appears flat, incorporates internal
drainage system.
Cedar porch screen
Overhanging structure shades the interior from direct sunlight
while still allowing abundant natural sunlight.
Radiant heating beneath the bamboo floors
The structure will be roughly 90 percent complete when it arrives
at Greenbuild; the deck will be added once the cabin is on-site at
the Pennsylvania Convention Center.
